Creative Composition for Better Photography

The easiest way to improve your photographs is to improve your composition skills. Whether you are using AUTO mode or you are an advanced amateur, understanding and improving composition will greatly improve how your images communicate to your viewers. Composition is something anyone can learn, it just takes a basic understanding of some simple principles and good, old-fashioned practice. This class will get you started with both by combining theoretical discussions with hands-on shooting assignments in the field.

During this one-day class, you will learn:
- Composition techniques: ‘Rule of thirds’, pattern and repetition, lines and angles, framing
- How to use selective focus and depth of field to create emphasis in your photos
- How to change and use exposure for impact and creating dramatic silhouettes
- How to select image orientation for best effect
- How to create dynamic movement to catch the eye
Class Format: Hands-on, interactive learning taught by a working professional photographer.
Class Time: 10:30 - 17:30
Experience Level: All levels - Participants should already know how to operate their camera and be able to control exposure and focus.
Class fee: CHF 325* per person
Location: ViewFinder Center - ZURICH studio (map)
Requirements: A digital compact (point & shoot) or digital SLR camera. A zoom lens is recommended, but not required. Come prepared to shoot: Don’t forget your charged batteries and memory cards.
Class size: Minimum of 5 students, maximum of 10.

Course Outline:
The morning session is held in the studio. We will cover the elements and rules of composition in photography, and they can be applied to improve your pictures. We’ll also discuss some camera techniques and settings you can use for creative composition.
We will take a short lunch break between sessions. (The cost of lunch is not included in the class fee).
During the afternoon session, we will go to a nearby location to shoot together and apply the techniques from the morning session. The instructor will offer additional tips and techniques and work individually with all students. We will also practice with some small assignments. At the end of the day, we will return to the ViewFinder Center to review images and discuss questions. The class concludes at 17:30.
You’ll leave this class with a greater understanding of composition and how to use it to create images that express your own photographic vision and to produce photos you can take pride in and cherish.
