Introduction to Studio Flash Lighting

Studio flash gives you the freedom and flexibility to control your lighting, giving you unlimited opportunities to experiment and explore the world of photography, no matter what the weather is like outside. In this class you will learn about studio lighting equipment and accessories, what you need to equip your own home studio and how to use one- and two-light setups to create dynamic images. Most of the class will be dedicated to hands-on, interactive exercises under the guidance of the instructor. No previous studio or flash lighting experience necessary.

You will learn:

• About studio lighting equipment: flash heads, reflectors, softboxes, barn doors, gels, radio triggers, stands, and more.
• How to put together and equip your own, inexpensive home studio: what you need and what you don’t need.
• How to use simple studio flash lighting setups to create dramatic portraits.

Class Format: Hands-on, interactive learning, taught by a working professional photographer.
Class Time: 10:30 - 17:30
Experience Level: Beginner
Class Fees: CHF 375* per person (includes studio equipment usage fee)
Location: ViewFinder Center - ZURICH studio (map)
Class size: Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 8.
Class Requirements:

• A digital SLR camera with a pc-sync port or hot-shoe, a zoom lens is recommended.
• Participants should be familiar with their camera and be able to set exposure, white balance and focus controls.
• Come prepared to shoot: Don’t forget your charged camera batteries and memory cards.

Course Outline:

Morning Session:
Intro to studio lighting theory, flash equipment, and techniques.

We will take a short lunch break between sessions. (The cost of lunch is not included in the class fee).

Afternoon:
Hands-on studio sessions working with studio flash equipment under the supervision of the instructor. Students will work together in teams to create unique portraits while practicing a variety of lighting techniques. The instructor will provide individual feedback and guidance throughout the session. We close the day with a review of the images produced during the day and Q&A.
